November 19, 1002:
San Stimpo, Inarra: After being officially dedicated and named by Queen Isabella herself, the Inarran vessel the HMS Santo Sol set sail on November 2, charting a course eastward across the unknown ocean. The Queen declared the ship "testament to our kingdom's resourcefulness and resolve. We have faith in our vessel and the spirit it embodies." Across Hesket: With news of the launch of the Santo Sol, other kingdoms have rushed to set their own transoceanic vessels sailing. In Tamplonia, the Prince and the Archpatriarch gave their blessing to the HHS Lumen before it left port. In Castagna, Princess Francesca tied her scarf to the bow of the HHS Catamount as a personal token. In Bluewall, Allondell, King Harold called the HMS Leonine "the finest vessel the kingdom, and indeed the world, has ever seen." In Chardreau, the HMS Dauphine was hastily rushed out the door in hopes of keeping pace with the other ships. Jiyoma, Seiguntou (Gioma, Napermo): Messengers for Lady Mizuho, Viceroy for Seiguntou, expressed continued displeasure at the "intrusion of foreign vessels into his Imperial Majesty's territorial waters." She warned that "vessels which violate our imperial security will be dealt with properly."
September 4, 1002:
Cadfaigh: The whole of the family Dermac, a Caelti clan, took the buck's oath, pledging fealty to Queen Marilyn and renouncing blood magic on June 23. In an unprecedented move, King Dmitri announced that the Dermacs would be granted the right to settle in the new barony of Dmitria, in northern Ragnorack. Courtiers note that the Dermacs are surrounded by Cadfainn clans who supported the Gold faction during the War for the Throne, and that the Dermacs' newfound allegiance to the Queen is unlikely to warm them to their neighbors. The Dermac's relocation would thus protect their own skin, as well as providing King Dmitri with settlers and Queen Marilyn with available land. Iñarra: Despite having lost the famed shipwrights the Delagossas to Tamplonia, Queen Isabella's admirals have been aggressively hiring shipbuilders interested in her challenge to build a transoceanic vessel, one that can sail to Yamamoto. Many craftsman from as far away as Kjolnir have answered her call, and have already begun work on new vessel for her Majesty's navy, the H.M.S. Santo Sol. Iñarran courtiers believe her Majesty's shipbuilding program has thus far succeeded in its secondary goal -- shoring up support among her nobles by increasing the kingdom's prestige. Last week, the count of Orellana, not generally reckoned among the Queen's supporters, contributed to her shipbuilding efforts with a shipment of timber. Tamplonia: The Delagossas, having left Iñarra for their native land, have announced that their new ship, the H.H.S. Lumen, is "the best vessel we have ever crafted". Many dockworkers believe the vessel is capable of sailing distances greater than any Hesketine vessel they have seen. Rumors abound that the Tamplonian government intends to put the ship to the test by attempting to send her to Dosan. Castagna: Shipwrights under Anatasia D'Avirro, the former aid to the Delagossas, have announced that they have nearly completed their ship the H.H.S. Catamount. Under D'Avirro's leadership, the shipwrights claim they have improved upon numerous shipbuilding techniques, especially to the mainmast and keel. D'Avirro, however, continues to spend much of her time working on new designs that, according to rumor, will allow the ship to compete as a transoceanic vessel. Tolbury, Allondell: Spokesmen for the Allondine admirals announced in late June that his Majesty, King Harold, has also commissioned a seagoing vessel of "modern capabilities". Shipwrights and dockyard workers state that his Majesty is obviously spending a great deal of money on this project, having hired a very large labor force indeed, and at generous rates. Lorraux, Chardreau: Not seeking to be outdone by their rivals to the north, Chardrois officials also announced in May that they are hiring shipwrights. Northhaven, Ragnorack: Courtiers for the Cadfainn and Ragnorackan courts claim that King Dmitri of Ragnorack is in favor of his wife's navy commissioning a transoceanic vessel. However, they also report that Queen Marilyn is less interested in international prestige than her husband, and has opted to use her treasury to rebuild wartime damages throughout Cadfaigh. Rousin, Chardreau: After having spent six years reversing the Marakhs' gains of the late 980s, Chardrois forces under Yves, Count of Duyenne, advanced into the desert town of Rousin on June 24 and raised the Chardrois standard over the town. Rousin (called al-Rusi by the Marakhs) had not been held by Chardreau since Marakh raiders took control of the town in 934. King Robert hailed the "liberation of Rousin" as a "great victory" in the fight to "return rightful rule" to the lands to the kingdom's south. Jiyoma, Seiguntou (Gioma, Napermo): Lady Mizuho, Viceroy for Seiguntou, has reiterated and strengthened her warnings that Hesketines should not attempt to sail to Yamamoto. "We shall use any and all means at our disposal to prevent intrusion upon the ocean between Seiguntou and the home islands, waters which are the sole possession his Imperial Majesty."
June 21, 1002:
Arregal, Ragnorack: The Barony of Arregal was host to a strange phenomenon in early March when a village trapped out of time, thought to be merely a fairy tale, appeared in the evening mists and proved to be real. Explorers retained by Baron Peter of Arregal and by a scholar of the Aurelian order claim that the village appears in the real world for one day every fifty years. They say that during the times the village vanishes, time inside it moves slower, such that the villagers only experience one day for each year that passes in the rest of the world. The explorers report that the residents of the village all believed that it was eight centuries earlier, before the fall of the Sturian Empire, and indeed two of the residents of the village claimed to be Sturian. The explorers learned that the occupants of the village were actually dead, their spirits trapped in the area, since an odd magical effect prevents those in the area from perceiving injury or death. The explorers further learned that those who died within the area became trapped themselves, and four of the explorers vanished with the village when it disappeared back into the mists the following night. The explorers informed the Baron that the phenomenon would persist for another two centuries. Baron Peter has sent a troop of scouts into the woods to place carved stone warning markers around the periphery of the area, to alert future travelers and explorers to take caution and not to enter the village if they should see it. Tolbury, Allondell: A young traveler arrived at Collegium Hall in late March, demanding an audience with the Collegium. He was seen by Thomas of Northhaven, Vicar for Northhaven, whom he informed of an area in Ragnorack that appeared from and vanished into the mists once every fifty years. The area seemed to be the result of a conflict among lesser divine beings and perhaps among the gods themselves. The traveler claimed that some of the gods were sustaining the strange effects of the area, while others were working to remove them. Vicar Thomas reported the story back to the full assembly of the Collegium, who heard the tale with interest, but deemed that no action was necessary. Presider Elaine stated, "When the gods themselves are in conflict, it is best for mortals not to intervene." The explorers who investigated the phenomenon were praised for not taking any action that could disturb the area. Veneza: Reacting to the announcement by Castagna that the Castagnans have hired Anastasia D'Avirro, the former aid to famed shipwrights the Delagossas, the Prince of Veneza announced on April 4 that Veneza would offer generous compensation to "any shipbuilders of reputation and talent" willing to work for the Venezans. Iñarra: Queen Isabella, suffering from the loss of the Delagossas to their native Tamplonia, announced with much fanfare on April 8 that she was to offer a challenge to any master shipwrights willing to work for the Iñarran crown: to build for her Majesty a vessel capable of sailing to Dosan. "Our peers may offer diverse worldly goods," read the Queen's proclamation, "but we instead offer the everlasting fame of crafting the first Hesketine vessel to make the voyage" across the eastern ocean, a vessel that "will restore to the lands of Hesket the dignity it so greatly lost" when the Yamamotoans invaded. Jiyoma, Seiguntou (Gioma, Napermo): The Viceroy of Seiguntou, speaking on behalf of the Emperor, spoke out harshly against Iñarra or any Hesketine land daring to make a transoceanic journey. "The waters between Yamamoto and her possession Seiguntou belong to his Imperial Majesty and his Imperial Majesty alone," cautioned Lady Mizuho. "His Imperial Majesty's navy will protect it accordingly from trespassers and pirates."
March 27, 1002:
Iñarra: Queen Isabella has issued a proclamation, encouraging anyone with information about the strange disappearances occurring in the southwestern part of the kingdom, particularly in the area of Batille, to provide such information to any Iñarran lord. A reward is promised for information that proves useful. Terdosa, Tamplonia: Elunian officials for his Highness, Prince Philip, announced with much excitement on January 19 that the Delagossas, famed shipbuilders who have been working for the Iñarran crown over the last year, have been wooed back to their native Tamplonia. Tamplonia states that "his Highness is keen to ensure the continued strength of his navy, and is delighted to have his own subjects leading the construction." The Delagossas are expected to begin construction on ships for Tamplonia within the month. Castagna: Princess Francesca of Castagna announced on January 24 that her principality, one of Delona's strongest, has hired the Delagossa's chief assistant, Anastasia D'Avirro, as a shipwright in her own right. "I am confident that her many years of study with the Delagossas, combined with her own talent, makes Madame D'Avirro every bit as qualified as her former mentors," remarked the Princess. D'Avirro has already initiated plans for three vessels. San Stimpo, Iñarra: Before their departure for Tamplonia, the Delagossas completed two new vessels for the Iñarran navy. However, with the loss of the two famed shipbuilders, Iñarra's plans for a vastly stronger navy are currently imperiled. Iñarran royal officials have reportedly begun discussions with shipwrights all over Delona and as far as Roudoigne. Highlands, Cadfaigh: With the birth of Prince Martin of Cadfaigh and Ragnorack ensuring a stable dynasty in Cadfaigh (moreover, a dynasty supporting the bucks), three more clans of Caelti have taken the buck's oath since the new year. The Sheaneys, the Keelans, and the Tullews stood before noble officials and took the oath renouncing blood magic and declaring allegiance to Queen Marilyn. Many attribute the recent rise in those taking the buck oath to Cormac Gulloy, himself a buck, who in May of last year made a public statement supporting Queen Marilyn over the Caelti rebels who "have brought [the Caelti] nothing". Gulloy's support of the Queen, and of the Stone of Kings which, as part of her throne "unites this land at last", was known to have swayed the Keelans especially. Dubraugh, Cadfaigh: On February 4, at his winter residence in his queen's capital, King Dmitri of Ragnorack officially named Sir Donald Siegenjaar as the Baron of the new shire of Dmitria, in Ragnorack's far north. Sir Donald (now Lord Donald) had long led the king's campaign in the wilderness region, advancing the human troops against the grum tribes in the area. Siegenjaar had a distinguished career and had led a successful campaign, so his elevation to baron comes as little surprise. With Dmitria now named an official barony, the King and Lord Donald both are encouraging human settlers, especially Cadfainn, to take up land in the area. King Dmitri then named Dame Heidi MacCorren as the new Commander of the Northern Marches, replacing the outgoing Lord Donald. Buttressed by Cadfainn troops, Dame Heidi and her Ragnorackan knights and troops are now to push the line of human settlement further north and east, into the Brenwood which borders Kjolnir.
